5-Inch vs. 4½-Inch Pool Table Pockets
Pocket size is measured at the mouth of the pocket, from cushion nose to cushion nose. A recreational table may have corner pockets around 5 inches wide, while a tighter 4½-inch opening provides substantially less margin for error.
A regulation pool ball is 2¼ inches in diameter. Two balls together measure 4½ inches. At a 5-inch opening there is approximately half an inch of additional space; at 4½ inches those same two balls fit extremely tight.
Half an inch doesn’t sound like much. On a pool table, it makes a substantial difference.
The Right Way to Tighten Pool Table Pockets
Proper pocket tightening involves more than simply stacking thick rubber facings on the ends of the cushions. For significant pocket-size changes, precision-cut hardwood extensions can be fitted to the existing subrails and shaped to establish the desired opening and pocket geometry. Cushion rubber is then fitted to the extended rail as the build requires.

Real Project: 8-Foot Golden West — Troutdale, Oregon
This 8-foot Golden West originally had corner pockets measuring approximately 5 inches. The pockets were modified to approximately 4½ inches and the table was finished with Simonis 860HR Shark Grey cloth.
The result is a noticeably more demanding table that rewards accurate shot-making and creates a better environment for serious practice.

Precision Leveling Matters
A performance upgrade only works if the playing surface is true. A table can look level and still produce inconsistent roll.
Pool Table Masters uses precision machinist levels to check the slate in multiple directions and make fine adjustments for accurate, consistent play.
Flooring matters too. Carpet, padding, rubber/interlocking tiles and floating floors can compress or settle under a heavy pool table, sometimes requiring adjustment after the floor stabilizes.
