Should Pool Table Cloth Be Glued or Stapled?
The correct attachment method depends on how the table is built. Professional cloth installation starts with the table—not a one-method-fits-all rule.
The Table Determines the Method
Stapling and gluing can both produce excellent results when used on the construction they were designed for. The important factors are a secure attachment surface, controlled cloth tension, proper alignment and careful work around the pockets.
When Cloth Is Stapled
Wood-Backed Slate
Many residential slate tables provide a wood backing beneath or around the slate that is designed to accept staples. This gives the installer a strong, adjustable attachment point.
Controlled Tension
Staples allow cloth tension to be worked progressively around the table. Proper stretching helps produce a smooth surface without wrinkles or loose areas.
Future Service
A properly stapled installation is straightforward to remove during a future recover, provided the underlying wood remains in serviceable condition.
Rails
Rail cloth is commonly stapled to the wood rail assembly. The cloth must be tensioned consistently while maintaining clean folds and pocket-area work.
When Cloth Is Glued
Some tables do not provide a suitable wood surface for staples. Depending on the construction, adhesive installation may be the correct method.
Construction Matters
Commercial, coin-operated and other table designs may use slate or backing systems that require adhesive rather than staples.

When adhesive is appropriate, Pool Table Masters applies it in a controlled manner to the backside of the cloth where needed. We do not indiscriminately spray adhesive across the slate or playing surface.
Clean Attachment
The goal is secure cloth tension without unnecessary adhesive contamination. Correct preparation matters for both the current installation and future service.
Not a Shortcut
Glue should not be used simply because it is faster or easier. It should be selected because the table’s construction calls for it.
Does Stapled Cloth Play Better Than Glued Cloth?
Not inherently. When either method is performed correctly, the finished playing surface can be smooth, tight and consistent. Cloth quality, tension, alignment, slate condition and installation technique have a much greater effect on the finished result.
Can a Glued Table Be Converted to Staples?
Sometimes, but only if the table has an appropriate wood attachment surface and the construction supports it. A table without suitable backing should not be modified simply to force a stapled installation.
Likewise, a table designed for staples should not automatically be converted to glue. The installation method should follow the table’s structure.
What Matters Most During a Recover
Slate Preparation
The playing surface should be inspected for chips, old adhesive, debris and seam issues before new cloth goes on.
Even Tension
Cloth needs controlled, balanced tension so it lies flat without distortion, loose areas or wrinkles.
Pocket Work
Pocket openings require careful relief cuts, folds and attachment. Poor work here can affect appearance and cloth durability.
Correct Cloth
The cloth itself affects speed, durability and maintenance. Installation cannot compensate for choosing the wrong product for how the table will be used.
Replacing Cloth While the Table Is Apart
If a table is already being disassembled for moving, repair or slate work, that can be an efficient time to replace worn cloth. Existing cloth can sometimes be reused, but previous installation methods, age and condition may cause damage during removal.
