Game Room Planning

Designing the Ultimate Setup

Creating the perfect billiard space requires more than just dropping a table in an open room. To ensure maximum playability, comfort, and style, keep these essential factors in mind when planning your game room:

  • Room Size & Clearance: Proper spacing is crucial for an unobstructed game. You need enough clearance around all four sides of the table so players can shoot comfortably from any angle without their cue hitting a wall or post. Standard cues typically require at least 5 feet of open space around the table perimeter.
  • Dedicated Lighting: Good lighting eliminates distracting shadows on the playfield. Position a dedicated multi-shade billiard light directly over the center of the table, ideally mounted 30 to 36 inches above the bed of the slate, to ensure even coverage across all six pockets.
  • Flooring Choices: A pool table is extremely heavy, so stability is key. Hardwood, tile, or low-pile carpet are ideal surfaces. High-pile or plush carpeting can shift over time, causing the table to go out of level. If you have hard floors, placing a large area rug under the table adds comfort and prevents stray balls from chipping.
  • Wall Colors & Ambiance: Choose wall tones that complement the felt color and prevent glare. Earthy tones, deep blues, or warm neutrals create a cozy, classic pool hall atmosphere, while matte or eggshell finishes help minimize reflections from overhead lights.
  • Cue & Accessory Storage: Keep your space organized and protect your equipment from damage by integrating dedicated storage. Wall-mounted or floor-standing cue racks keep cues straight and off the floor, while providing neat storage for balls, chalk, racks, and brushes.
  • Humidity & Climate Control: Wood and felt are sensitive to environmental changes. Excessive humidity can cause cue sticks to warp, wood frames to expand, and felt to absorb moisture, slowing down play. Maintain a consistent climate with stable humidity levels to preserve the life and performance of your table.
